I enjoyed the posts about your trip to see the sandhills cranes. I took a similar trip about 15 years ago. It was too bad the darkness hampered your ability to see the cranes land. I likened it to "dead chicken drop" --think of the rubber chicken used in gags being lowered slowly from a ceiling.

I recently visited with a native of New Mexico who told me they hunted sandhill cranes around their irrigation canals. The farmers there considered the cranes nothing more than "rats with wings!" It reminds me that perspective shades every story.

I also found your notes wondering about the negative effects of a corn diet interesting. That perspective also seems to shade much of the work done by farmers in the Midwest. We (me and other members of the public) are relying on you to accurately and factually report on that issue. Trust in journalists has seriously eroded during the infancy of new media. I hope your generation will work diligently to restore that trust.
